For years now, NCCS has been expanding preschool classrooms into vegetable gardens at each of our child development centers. The vegetable gardens at each site offer learning opportunities for children and their families, and provide fresh produce that is incorporated into the meals served at our facilities.
The recent addition of the Gardens at River Road, a half-acre garden in Oceanside, provides opportunities for volunteers, families, and preschool children to learn where their food comes from and benefit from a diet rich in fresh vegetables.
Today, the Edible Garden Project continues to sprout to life in 4 separate sites (and counting) in Northern San Diego County growing fresh healthy goodies like cabbage, a variety of herbs, lettuce, celery, onions, potatoes, snow peas, zucchini, and cucumbers in a total of 25,255 square feet of garden space- that's a lot of healthy eating!
North County Community Services (NCCS) is a nonprofit organization in Northern San Diego County. NCCS is passionately committed to improving our neighbors health and well being by providing programs that educate young children, support working families, provide food for those feeding the hungry and ultimately create opportunities to improve the quality of life for residents of North County.
For over 40 years, NCCS has been providing vitally needed services to local residents, operating seven Preschool Child Development Centers as well as North Countys Food Bank (established in 1989) as well as our Edible Garden Project which teaches children and families about the benefits of making health food choices.
NCCS is also the fiscal agent for North Countys Regional Winter Shelter System, which serves 700 homeless individuals nightly from December through March of each year.
